Ravine House is a distinctive 1960s modernist home nestled within a secluded wooded site in Derbyshire. The original structure was noted for its exceptional detailing and had remained largely untouched since its construction. The client sought to modernise the property while preserving its architectural integrity, commissioning a deep refurbishment and a contemporary extension.
The client’s primary goal was to upgrade the house to modern living standards, including the installation of central heating and insulation, while maintaining the character and quality of the original design. The brief called for an extension of the property as well as upgrading its energy effiicency.
The architectural vision focused on expressing the original building materials and creating a strong connection between the house and its natural surroundings. The new extension was designed to be unapologetically contemporary, featuring multi-pitched roofs and complex geometries.
DYSE developed a hybrid structural solution combining steel and timber framing. Moment connections and sheathed timber panels were used to provide lateral stability. Particular attention was given to the detailing of the feature chimneys, which required careful coordination and a pragmatic approach guided by building regulations.
Early-stage sketching was integral to the design process, allowing DYSE to communicate structural concepts quickly and effectively with the wider design team. This facilitated a high level of coordination and design integration from the outset.
The project began with a thorough assessment of the existing structure and site conditions. DYSE collaborated closely with the architect and contractor from the early design stages, using sketches and concept models to explore structural options. Regular design workshops ensured alignment across disciplines, and iterative detailing helped resolve complex junctions and geometries. The construction phase was supported by ongoing site visits and responsive engineering input to adapt to emerging challenges.
