The Old Tram Bridge has a long history, opening in 1802 and has been renovated and rebuilt many times before being closed for good in 2019. It has previously been a vital link between Avenham Park and Penwortham meaning that pedestrians, cyclists and horseriders had to find alternative routes. The bridge was a lifeline for these communities who wanted something that could reconnect the areas and stand the test of time.
Based across the River Ribble, the bridge is for pedestrians and cyclists to move between the park and Penwortham. The old bridge was demolished in 2024, giving us a blank canvas with which to design and create a safe, accessible crossing over the river.
DYSE provided structural engineering expertise for a new steel and concrete bridge designed to meet modern standards while respecting the site’s heritage. The design prioritises durability, accessibility and minimal environmental impact, incorporating features that ensure safe passage for all users.
We worked with Eric Wright and Preston City Council to provide detailed structural design and planning for the complex lift operation. The installation required precision engineering and coordination to position the new bridge safely over the River Ribble during a limited window.
The new bridge restores a critical link between Avenham Park and Penwortham, encouraging walking and cycling and enhancing the city’s green infrastructure. It’s a significant investment in the future of Preston and the surrounding areas.
