Kidsgrove Station is in need of redevelopment due to it being outdated and actively discouraging passenger numbers. It was awarded funding by Newcastle-under-Lyme Council in order to make the outdated station recover its former glory and become a more modern station on the line between Derby and Crewe.
The station is located around 7.5 miles from Stoke-on-Trent and is managed by East Midlands Railway and is also in an area of historic coal mines. Kidsgrove was previously due to be redeveloped but the original plans were unworkable and the project was halted. Now the plans have been reworked, meaning the project has been given the green light to go ahead.
We are undertaking Workstage 2 feasibility for the station buildings, car park and site wide drainage. There are many challenges that had to be thought about and worked around, including heavily congested local roads with poor connectivity, a lack of urban development and underused heritage assets.
Due to the historic coal mining site, DYSE had to put a lot of attention and focus into understanding the full extent of the constraints and requirements of coal mining remediation on site.
The station is due to be a new hub for this section of the line, with a full programme that includes a full refurbishment of the main station, and island building on platform two, a new cycle store, improvements to access for pedestrians and cyclists, a revised car park layout and other visual improvements.
