Strawberry Footbridge

The Strawberry Footbridge near Retford needed more than a like-for-like replacement. Sections of the existing structure were no longer compliant with Network Rail regulations and any new crossing had to be designed with one eye on the future, built to accommodate the electrification of the line it spans, so it wouldn’t need to be revisited again.
The bridge sits on the Manchester-Sheffield-Cleethorpes line near Retford station, connecting Strawberry Road and Wharton Street with Pennington Walk, a route well used by dog walkers and cyclists, and important to a neighbouring residential community. Working over a live railway with a housing estate close by set clear parameters: minimal disruption to train operations, a tight programme and careful consideration with QTS and Network Rail at every stage.
Our scope covered the full package superstructure, substructure and approaches. The 17-metre span carries ramps and a single flight of steps to the upside, designed to meet the requirements of the ‘Access for All’ initiative, meaning step-free access is built into the structure, not added as an afterthought. Designing for future electrification clearances added another layer of constraint and one that shaped decisions across the whole scheme.
Delivering a bridge over a live railway requires a level of coordination that goes well beyond the structural design. We worked closely with Harrisons Engineering, QTS and Network Rail throughout – managing possessions, sequencing work around train operations and keeping the programme on track. The constraints were real, but so was the commitment of the team to getting it done properly.
The bridge reopened in December 2024 and the community is grateful to have its crossing back. Fully accessible, compliant and future-proofed for electrification, it does everything the brief asked for and does it quietly.
