Ropemakers Mill is a historic rope works factory in Stockport, Cheshire. The original site comprised of a three-storey mill building with a large surrounding single storey industrial unit which was a later addition. The project seeks to convert an existing three storey Ropeworks mill into residential apartments. Our scope included defect inspections of the original structures, detailed structural design for the conversion and new buildings, and site wide civils design (drainage, SuDS, highways and external works).
Using our previous experience of conversion and refurbishment of historic masonry buildings, we provided a comprehensive set of sympathetic but buildable repair details to address the numerous defects in the original mill building. As part of our inspection of the original mill building, we required several specialist surveys to confirm the condition of the building, including a timber survey and masonry damp survey. These surveys allowed us to build up a detailed picture of the condition of the building to confirm which areas of the structure we could retain with minimal intervention works.
