Oak Villa Barn

Oak Villa Barn is a conversion of a cluster of redundant farm building into a light-filled, generous family home. The project had to balance the old and the new to create something that looked like it had always been there and belonged in the space.
Located in the Cheshire countryside, the existing barn complex had served as workshops and farm storage. The buildings might have been full of character, but they were disconnected, poorly lit and no where near habitable. The brief called for an open-plan family home that would honour the original structures without being constrained by them; retaining the agricultural honesty of the place while introducing the light, space and warmth a family home needs.
Artform Architects developed a design that works with the barn’s character rather than against it: retaining the raw materiality and scale of the original, while opening it up with large windows, glazed doors and a new mezzanine level. Our role was to make that vision structurally possible. We designed steel frames capable of spanning the wide, column-free spaces the layout demanded and carefully integrated new floor and roof structures into the existing fabric without undermining the building’s character. The structural detailing was coordinated closely with the architectural ambition; nothing was resolved in isolation.
Barn conversions rarely go exactly to plan, and this one was no exception. Existing conditions on site called for pragmatic adjustments and we worked closely with Artform Architects, the client and the contractor to adapt our structural solutions as the project evolved. Coordinating with bespoke joinery packages and high-performance glazing required precision and close communication at every stage. We treated every step as a detail worth getting right, not just a problem to resolve and move on from.
The home now feels spacious and functional. Somewhere that wears its agricultural history well alongside its modernity. The wide spans, the mezzanine, the quality of light; none of it would have been possible without structural engineering that was willing to engage with the design challenge rather than simply respond to it.
