The Henley Gate Vehicle Bridge is a key piece of infrastructure for the Ipswich Garden Suburb, enabling a new local road connection over the East Suffolk railway line. Delivered as part of the Henley Gate residential development, the bridge unlocks access between the Henley Gate and Fonnereau areas and supports the long-term delivery of a major new neighbourhood.

The project forms one of two new rail-spanning crossings delivered during a tightly controlled programme, providing critical road access for the development without delaying railway operations.

The bridge spans the active Ipswich to Lowestoft railway line, within a constrained construction corridor adjoining an expanding residential site. Rail possession opportunities were extremely limited, with installation required to take place during a single Christmas blockade. Traditional in-situ construction was not viable due to access restrictions, programme constraints and the need to minimise railway disruption.

The bridge was a planning requirement for the wider housing development, delivering thousands of new homes alongside community facilities, green space and active travel links.

The vehicle bridge was designed as a 45-46 metre single-span composite structure, comprising weathering steel main beams supporting a concrete deck to provide durability and reduced maintenance. The bridge carries a new local road designed to accommodate buses, emergency vehicles and general traffic while meeting highway and rail authority requirements.

To enable rapid installation, the structure was engineered for offsite fabrication and modular assembly. The deck construction was developed in collaboration with the precast supplier to manage lifting constraints, tolerances and installation risk within the limited possession window.

DYSE supported the project from early option development through detailed design, helping define buildable bridge solutions that could be delivered within a compressed 12-month programme. The team developed highly coordinated designs aligned with the installation methodology and provided technical input to support railway approvals and possession planning.

The bridge was fabricated offsite and installed during a full Christmas rail blockade, working alongside the contractor, precast supplier and rail stakeholders to ensure safe, efficient delivery and timely hand back of the railway.

The Henley Gate Vehicle Bridge was successfully installed within the allocated rail possession, restoring rail services ahead of programme and providing a durable, long-term road crossing for the development. The bridge now forms a critical connection within the Ipswich Garden Suburb, supporting residential growth, public transport, emergency access and future community integration.
