Deep Pit Bridge is a rare example of 19th Century wrought iron craftsmanship in Wigan, recently raised to make way for the electrification of the Wigan to Bolton line. DYSE played a key role in ensuring the Grade II listed bridge could be lifted safely and in a way that protected the historic character while enabling modern rail upgrades that will benefit passengers for years to come.
The bridge sits between Hindley and Ince in Wigan and was originally built in 1887 as part of the wider Liverpool and Bury railway expansion. Its unusual length and elegant design granted it Grade II listed status, marking it as a structure of significant architectural and historical interest. As part of Network Rail’s £100 million electrification scheme, the footbridge needed to be raised so that new 250,000-volt overhead line equipment could be installed safely underneath it.
Our approach balanced heritage sensitivity with technical precision. DYSE designed and coordinated a bespoke propping and jacking system capable of lifting the 150-year-old structure by 1.6 metres without causing damage to its wrought iron components or masonry supports. This engineering solution provided the essential clearance for electrification while preserving the bridge’s history, making it more inclusive and aligned with modern accessibility standards.
Working as part of the team alongside Mabey Hire, Tony Gee & Partners and Kier Group, we delivered a precise lifting sequence that protected the bridge’s structural integrity throughout. Close coordination with Network Rail ensured the methodology aligned with the wider programme of bridge modifications and route upgrades. The lift was planned around operational and community constraints, reflecting both the technical demand of the electrification works and the need to manage impact on residents and passengers.
Deep Pit Bridge now stands higher, safer and ready for the next generation of railway travel. With the new overhead line equipment in place, the Wigan to Bolton corridor can support greener, quieter and more reliable electric trains. The addition of step-free ramps means the bridge now serves more people than ever before, making the local landmark truly accessible.
